The Plastic Cup, launched in 2013 aims to clean up the River Tisza and its floodplains from the plastic waste brought there by floods, also known as the PET bottle flood. The uniqueness of the initiative that it uses the waste to fight back against the pollution.
Over the years, waste management and water professionals have joined the team, together with nearly 2000 committed volunteers. They are the Plastic Pirates. They are ready for action not only on the Upper Tisza but also at the Tisza Lake, not only in summer but also in winter, wherever, whenever and however the situation wishes. In 2019, a record volume of more than 36 tonnes of waste was collected and processed, thus near half of that was recyclable.
The secret of the Plastic Cup that it turns a difficult and dangerous task such the waste picking into a funny and inspiring team building activity, into an adventure that lasts for life. After taking part, we guarantee that participants will look with different eyes on their own waste, too.
